Louis M. Salerno, Owner of Questroyal Fine Art, LLC offers professional advice for art dealers who are looking to open their own art gallery space, and in particular, what you need to know in renting a space:
"When renting a gallery space you really want to look for:
- Location
The type of art you want to sell can determine the best area to be in (for instance, in Manhattan, contemporary galleries tend to be downtown). - Hanging Space
Think how many paintings you can show at any given time on the provided walls. - Storage Space
- A Room for Openings and Exhibitions
As you grow you may want room to prepare shipments and do framing, but you can survive without those things. Many dealers also joke about having a "closing room," where you can show clients paintings in private and hopefully "seal the deal," but that is becoming a little passé."
