The Bellarmine Museum of Art (BMA) at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut officially opened to the public on October 25, 2010.
The Museum is part of Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution of higher learning.
The Bellarmine Museum of Art at Fairfield University was established in 2009 and the Museum officially opened a year later.
The Museum's mission according to their website: "Art is a universal language, capable of uniting individuals and societies across time, space, and history: It has the capacity to teach, to delight, and to move. Art is a critical component of a holistic educational experience."
"These principles have long been championed by Fairfield University through its steadfast commitment to the Humanities and the Jesuit pedagogical tradition. They equally inform the activities of the Bellarmine Museum, which is devoted to facilitating lifelong learning opportunities for its visitors and supporters, while simultaneously helping these individuals cultivate a deeper sense of themselves and of the transcendent."
"The Bellarmine Museum is dedicated to preserving, studying, and exhibiting those objects entrusted to its care, while never losing sight of its obligation to educate and inspire its many audiences, for the greater enrichment of all."
The Bellarmine Museum of Art at Fairfield University is located in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Museum's Conservation Department:
Art conservation is the practice of preserving and restoring an artwork. Art conservators do detailed research and scientific analysis to explore the best way to conserve an artwork for future generations.
The Museum does not have an in-house conservation department.
Famed Artworks in Collection:
The Museum has acquired paintings, sculptures and decorative art including Italian Renaissance and Baroque art. The collection also includes pre-Columbian pottery, African masks, and 19th-century South East Asian sculptures.
In addition to the Museum, the University is also home to The Walsh Art Gallery whose mission is "informed by certain humanistic traditions that provide a framework of inquiry throughout the University. As art has the visual capacity to 'engage the body, mind, heart and soul of the human person,' it is isomorphic with Jesuit pedagogy and supports the whole person entering the learning experience and the 'continual interplay of context, experience, reflection, action and evaluation.'"
"The gallery seeks to establish direct, interactive and meaningful connections with students, faculty and the Fairfield community. Committed to facilitating a growing relationship with visitors by creating conditions and opportunities in which they can immediately experience reflection and action, the gallery also seeks to provide its visitors with the experience of multiple contemporary visual and didactic discourses through which the visitor can continue to make significant connections, dialogue with others and question meanings."
