Provenance

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Provenance is the history of ownership of a work of fine art. Documentation of the ownership of the art work shows that the piece is authentic, original and not a reproduction or a forgery, or that it is a piece of stolen or looted art.

The provenance of an art work will be included in a catalogue raisonné or in other texts about the artist and the work.

Establishing the provenance of a work of fine art is important for its cultural heritage and for the market price. Art appraisers are experts in examining and researching an art work and its provenance, so a certificate by a certified art appraiser guarantees the work.
