Established:

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) was established in 1893 as the Denver Artists' Club in Denver, Colorado.

The museum has a collection of over 68,000 works of art. Most notable is its collection of American Indian art, and pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art. Additionally, the museum also has "European and American painting and sculpture, architecture, design and graphics, modern and contemporary, Asian, African, Oceanic, western American and textile art."

History:

Since its founding in 1893, the Denver Art Museum has been enlarging its art collection.

Currently, the museum encompasses 356,000-square-feet of space. When the museum required an expansion, they commissioned Daniel Libeskind to design the Hamilton Building, which opened on October 7, 2006. The expansion is covered in reflective titanium panels and its design emulates the Rocky Mountains and geometric crystals found in the area.

Mission:

"The Denver Art Museum is a private, non-profit, educational resource for Colorado. The mission of the museum is to enrich the lives of Colorado and Rocky Mountain residents through the acquisition, preservation, and presentation of art works in both the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, and by supporting these works with exemplary educational and scholarly programs."

Location:

The Denver Art Museum is located in downtown Denver, on 13th Avenue between Broadway and Bannock Streets.

Museum's Conservation Department:

The Museum's Conservation Department maintains, restores and conserves the entire art collection. Currently, they are restoring the Old Master paintings. The department has the latest technology such as radiographs and 35mm color photography in order to document and conserve the collection for future generations.

Famed Artworks in Collection:

The Museum's collection encompasses a wide range of cultural art and artifacts from all over the world.

Famous European and American pieces in the collection include artwork by Monet, Degas, Winslow Homer, Picasso, Matisse. Photographs of Native American portraits by notable photographers Edward Curtis, Alexander Gardner and David Francis Barry are included.
