The Musée du Louvre (the Louvre Museum) officially opened 10 August 1793 as a public museum, but the site's history dates back to the 12th century.

Location:

The Louvre is centrally located in Paris, on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st Arrondissement.

Famed Artworks in Collection:

Approximately 35,000 artworks from prehistoric times to the 19th century are exhibited over 60,000 square meters of gallery space.

Famous artworks in the collection include Nike of Samothrace, Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa.
